Elivis at Skatefest

(Thank you, Yoriki-san)
(Thank you,Erin)EDB
(Thank you, LeiLani! for letting me know.)

"The practice went great, the warm up was great . I've taken everything I've got and if this is the best for now , then that's it. I need the mileage I've got to go home and train. I will be going to Philadelphia then take some time off and go to Toronto. I will be going to the Olympics, I did not stay in for three year's to quit now. Under these circumstances being under the same roof with the best in world has been a great experience."

CTV(3/22)
"The hard thing was that I felt good during practice and warm-ups but it just wasn't there. I fought through and that's what counts."

`I went out there and gave it everything I could right until the end.I just need the run-throughs and the time."

CP(3/23)
I'm going for Olympics, no doubt about it, I didn't stay in the last three years just to get my butt ripped out there. I stayed in for the Olympics and that's my focus. I'm going to work as hard as I can to try and make it happen.
"No, no second thoughts. I just needed more time to refine my programs.
"Don't feel sorry for me. Never. It's called sport. There's low points, there's high points, and there's points in the middle. This obviously is a low point."
"The whole season was a struggle.""I wanted to come here.I had to compete this year.
I went out and fought the whole way. Whether it happened or not. . .it's the fight that counts. It's just that I needed mileage (on the programs). If it means I have to work harder, so be it.
"I really have some ideas what I want to do for the Olympics already."

"I needed more training time. I didn't stay in for another three years just to quit now. This is a steppingstone. I still feel like I'm in hell, but sometimes things like this either knock you out or make you stronger. Don't feel sorry for me, either. It's called sports. There are highs and there are lows and there are middles. This is obviously a low point.""

"I wasn't nervous. I felt great out there. Everything feels fluid. Everything feels easy."
"You guys want a quote. I said to (his coach Uschi Keszler), 'I've never felt like that in my life and I never want to feel like this again. That's enough motivation for me."
"You never accept it. I just look at it like I have to work harder. I know what I have to do. I stayed in there four years for the Olympics. I'm not backing out now. This is just a stepping stone. That's all it is"
"Someone asked me, 'what's it feel like, hell and back? And I said it feels like I'm still in hell. But I'm coming back. Something like this either knocks you out or makes you stronger. I've had different situations in my career. I've been knocked down. You get back up."
I feel great in practice. I just need training time. That's the bottom line. Age isn't a factor because I'm doing all the stuff with half the training."
"Where else can you have 18,000 people to sing Happy Birthday. "What more can I say."

The Edmonton Journal (3/23)
I need training time, that's the bottom line. I've got to work harder. Something like this, it either knocks you out or it makes you stronger. I've had situations in my career where you get knocked down, you get up. I didn't stay in there the last three years just to go out there and then not compete in the Olympics because I didn't get the training time or I didn't do it out there when it counted.

"Bottom line, I need more time to train. How much did the layoff hurt? Well, it was a factor, but when you step on the ice no one cares about that. I've got to work harder. I've got to focus on the Olympics. Age is not a factor"

The Seattle Times(3/23)
Where in the world can you go where 18,000 people sing `Happy Birthday' to you? They were wonderful. I've got to home and train. I will be going to the Olympics. I didn't stay in for three years to get my butt kicked and not go for it."

"All I felt when I finished was, I needed more time. But I'm not going to quit. I want to do what I'm capable of doing -- Quad toe-triple toe, triple Axel-triple toe, another Quad, another triple Axel. I just need to go home, train it properly and do it all over again."

National Post
Elvis Stojko can usually spend part of a routine in need of a third skate strapped to his bum and then handle the camera with a wry smile and a wink. But not this week. Not quite. The kiss-and-cry camera caught him emotionally wounded, shaking his head and lifting his eyes in self-deprecation. "I'm sorry," he mouthed in a message to Canadians. And then, as the final score came in, he gave a little wave into the camera, smiled woefully and mouthed "thank you." This is a man who knows how to use a TV camera to get his message across.

"One thing with Elvis and I will always say this, you can never count him out.
"He is that skater who can pull out a performance like Alexei Yagudin did (Tuesday) night. It's the hours of practice and years of competition that allows him to do that."
"I think you have to look at the big picture for Elvis. This is his first competition and it's one thing to be in shape in practice, but it's a whole different thing in competition and a year (since his last competition) is a long time.
"He's been limited this year. He doesn't have the training or the competition to draw on. You have to have it. It just doesn't happen by magic.
"He was well-trained (in 1996), he was in good shape, it appeared to be an aberration. You just worry that maybe he hasn't had enough time to come back for this competition." He'll want to skate a clean program. He'll want to land at least one quad and he'll want those (triple) Axels. His focus won't be on the placement, it'll be on salvaging the performance."
He's got such strong mental capabilities. He's a very tough guy and he knows how to leave a performance behind ... I know that with a good rest and a day off, he'll be back to form."

"I thought it was great. I came out and made a couple of little flipouts and things like that, but the marks were there. They were solid."
"I'm focused on what I have to do the rest of the week and I'm confident that it can be done. You want to be in the top three (in qualifying) and wrestling around with the other guys at the top."
"I know what to expect, I knew this would be more intense because it is in Canada and people expect a lot, but I prepared myself before coming here for the toughest and most intense competition."
"Then I got here and, okay, I'm ready. I just went out and did it. My head game is right on track."

Toronto Sun
"Someone was mentioning the other day, I think it was (former pairs star) Debbi Wilkes, about going into labour -- I don't understand that,But she said you have the baby but later you kind of forget (what the pain was like). And then you have another one and you go 'whoa, I remember what that feels like.' But I've done this enough times. It's like having 11 kids. I've done 11 worlds."

AP Sports
"You're just a tick lethargic, that little tick slow, and on the landings, you're just a little tick slow. You just want to be in the hunt somewhere, rustling around with the other guys. No problem. Give me a couple of days, I'll settle in and I'll be ready to compete."

Edmonton Sun
"I'm in the hunt. I'm not quite there. But I think the judges said, 'Yes, we know you're here and that you are in the hunt and we're ready for you. That's a good thing."
"Three Olympics. Eleven Worlds. I've always been in the hunt. I've always been there. Everything is solid." "People have no appreciation for it."
"A tick slower,When you get up at 5 a.m.... It would have looked a lot different if I'd skated in the afternoon."

Ottawa Sun
"Through some of the practices I've been on, I've heard some talk going around ... 'Elvis has got his stuff in gear, he's ready to go, he's in the hunt"
"Over the years, I've done it time and time again and people end up taking it for granted," "If I'd done a clean performance (yesterday), it would have been 'oh, he's back, no big deal. He can do it.' There's no appreciation for it. There's no understanding what it takes to do this."
"No matter where I go, it's always been 'he's in the hunt, but he's not quite there."But no matter what anyone else says, I've always been there, I've always competed."

Reuters
"To compete high performance at 9:15 in the morning, it's tough but the quad felt good. It was just a little tick slow on the take-off but it's where I want to be."
"This performance is a run-off competition that only counts for 20 (per cent). I'm focusing on the short and long (programs)."
"You have the baby and you kind of forget and then you have another baby and you go, Oh, now I remember what it feels like. "I've done this enough times. It's like having 11 kids. I've done 11 worlds, a couple of Olympics so you have a feel for it."

National Post
"The marks were solid. I think basically, they were telling me: 'Yes, we know you, and yes, you're in the hunt.I was out there like a horse straining at the bit.
" Everything is just a tick slow at this time of the morning. No aches, no pains, just a little winded out there,"
"I think if we were doing this three hours later, it would be fine. So it gives me something to build for later in the week."
"Honestly, I was wondering that myself, "Debbi Wilkes [the former pairs champion and CTV broadcaster] told me it was like giving birth. After a while, you forget the pain, until you have the next one, and then you go: 'Oh, now I remember.' And I did wonder if it would hit me like that when I got out there. But no, I remembered what it felt like." It's kind of like having 11 kids. I've done 11 worlds and [three] Olympics, I know what to expect. I knew this would be more intense, because it's in Canada, and people expect a lot.
But I'm glad I did a performance like this today, because if I had come out and done everything, solid and clean, people would have said, 'Oh, he's back. No problem.' And there wouldn't have been any appreciation for what it takes, and how fine a line it is."

Ottawa citizen
"Somebody was mentioning it the other day, I think it was (broadcaster and former skater) Debbi Wilkes, about having labour with a baby. Well, I go, 'I don't understand that.' She said you have the baby, later on you kind of forget (the pain of labour), then you have another baby. Then you're like, 'Oh, now I remember what it feels like."
"And then I thought to myself, 'Oh my gosh, am I going to go through the same thing out there?' But, in essence, when I stepped out there I went, 'No, I still remember what it feels like."
I've done this enough times. It's like having 11 kids. I've done 11 worlds, couple of Olympics. You get a feel for it. I know what to expect. I knew this would be more intense because it is in Canada and people expect a lot. I prepared myself coming here mentally that it's going to be the toughest, most intense competition. When I got here, I went, 'OK, I'm ready,' and went out and did it."
"Everything is there," Stojko said. "Everything is solid. It's just that one tick slow. Doing two quads in the morning is a tough, tough challenge. But, for me, over the years I've done it time and time again, and people end up taking it for granted. So if I'd done a clean performance here, it'd be, 'Oh he's back, no big deal. He can do it.' There's no appreciation for it."

This week, CTV commentator Debbi Wilkes told him that coming back from an absence was like going into labour.
"Wait," Stojko told her, "I don't understand that.""You have the baby," she said, "and later on you kind of forget [what labour was like]. Then you have a baby, and then you remember." At first Stojko thought, "Ohmigosh, am I going to go through something like that out there?" But when he took to the ice Monday, debuting his much anticipated Gladiator routine, he remembered. "I've done this 11 times. It's like having 11 kids."
As for Stojko, he said it was better for him in the long run not to do a perfect program in the qualifying round. "Now I'm focused on the next day and for Thursday, which is the most important day," he said. "It's good that they have the run-offs Tuesday and I can get a good feel and make sure that under pressure and under stress, that when I'm picking in [for a jump], I'm solid."
"Pressure? "It's more intense because it is in Canada, and people expect a lot. "Coming here, people were saying it's going to be the toughest, most intense competition, but when I got here, I went, 'Okay, I'm ready.' I went out there and did it."

"I'm pacing myself," said Stojko, who, like Sandhu, isn't a morning person. "I don't feel [qualifying] is the real competition. I'm building up to later in the week to when it counts."

This is the first time I've seen Elvis healthy in a long time, All he wanted to do today was be comfortable in the take-off and it worked. In the afternoon it would be a clean performance but that wouldn't be a good thing, he has to climb yet, there is more to do this week. Since this is his first competition this is a good sign, usually he has one then he puts it up a notch and then again."

Calgary Herald
"I mean, he is jazzed. He's in great shape. He's got this look in his eye, this smile.
"I went out to Richmond Hill to do a show with him, and I get there thinking, 'Hmmmmm, what's he up to?'"
"I have to think most people still believe he's going to be a major player in this, but there are those -- unbelievably, to me -- who already have written him off."
"The Russians -- three-time world champ Alexei Yagudin and Evgeni Plushenko -- are favourites, and deservedly so. The judges like them. And they've never ever, despite his success, seemed to warm to Elvis in quite that way."
"The Americans are always right there. But this time, one (Todd Eldridge) of them is pretty old, the other (Timothy Goebel) is pretty young."
"If it had been me, I'd have been insulted. I mean, this is the silver medallist at the 2000 Worlds. This is someone who's represented our country with such success, such distinction. And they doubted his word? His word wasn't good enough for them? But he just kind of shrugged and said, 'OK, there are a few more people watching me skate today.' And he skated brilliantly."
"I think you'll see a different look to Elvis. Obviously, he skates very, very well, so that's all I could really add. We're trying to bring a quality, a refinement, to the edge he has in other areas. Just the way you stand before the music starts can help or hurt you. Whether or not you're facing the judges when you finish. Before, Elvis was so focused on the quad or the triple axel that he'd overlook the elements of the performance other than the jumps.
"And, well, a performance is just that; an entire entity, beginning to end. We're trying to fill in the spaces between those fantastic jumps."
"I'm not trying to be Martha Graham, adding all this wild, weird stuff. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here. The wheel's been rolling along pretty well up 'til now."
"It's fun to go there again, back in a way to the old days for me. I really enjoy the Stars On Ice thing but it's a different kind of skating."
"Yes, it does take me to another time in my life, in my skating career, one that's a lot of fun to revisit."
" It's not easy, to come back from injury into such a pressure-packed competition. But rising to these types of challenges is what makes champions. So count out Elvis at your own peril. Yes, these are his 11th Worlds. Yes, he's been hurt most of the season. But he loves this, being the underdog.
"He's a real fighter."
